A Year in Provence by Peter Mayle
This book is a pretty big departure for me compared to the usual style of books I read. But I really enjoyed it! I didn't love the book, but it was one of those books that after I finished it...I felt satisfied that I got what I wanted out of it.
Summary: A funny--and often hilarious--month-by-month account of the charms and frustrations of moving into an old French farmhouse in Provence and adapting to a very different way of life.
In summary, I would call this book delightful. It wasn't a typical, emotional travel novel about a couple restoring a house (and their lives) in a foreign country...I'm looking at you Eat, Pray, Love. It was a very frank and charming description of what it was like live and restore an old home in Provence.
The author details what it was like to work with locals and embracing the very different type of work and amount of time it takes to complete a task. He also provides very enlightening stories about truffle hunting, olive oil production, growing a vineyard, and describing the most wonderful meals. My favorite was his description of finding wild mushrooms and how the aroma and flavor was so robust.
My one beef with the story is that there's no sense of cost of living. It must be wonderful to take off and spend oodles of money renovating, eating, and existing.
In short, I liked it. It reminded me of a much shorter version of Under the Tuscan Sun.
