Once I opened this book, I could not put it down! It's the perfect intro into a trilogy and gives us enough storyline and character development to start everything off on the right foot (ahem...take note, Discovery of Witches).
Summary: The three Beauchamp women--Joanna and her daughters Freya and Ingrid--live in North Hampton, out on the tip of Long Island. Their beautiful, mist-shrouded town seems almost stuck in time, and all three women lead seemingly quiet, uneventful existences. But they are harboring a mighty secret--they are powerful witches banned from using their magic. Joanna can resurrect people from the dead and heal the most serious of injuries. Ingrid, her bookish daughter, has the ability to predict the future and weave knots that can solve anything from infertility to infidelity. And finally, there's Freya, the wild child, who has a charm or a potion that can cure most any heartache.
For centuries, all three women have been forced to suppress their abilities. But then Freya, who is about to get married to the wealthy and mysterious Bran Gardiner, finds that her increasingly complicated romantic life makes it more difficult than ever to hide her secret. Soon Ingrid and Joanna confront similar dilemmas, and the Beauchamp women realize they can no longer conceal their true selves. They unearth their wands from the attic, dust off their broomsticks, and begin casting spells on the townspeople. It all seems like a bit of good-natured, innocent magic, but then mysterious, violent attacks begin to plague the town. When a young girl disappears over the Fourth of July weekend, they realize it's time to uncover who and what dark forces are working against them.
First off, I have to confess that this is the same author of my guilty pleasure YA series, the Blue Bloods. AND, she even weaves in some of her characters from the Blue Bloods books. You won't miss anything if you haven't read those books, but I got a small kick of pleasure over it.
As I mentioned earlier, what I liked best about this book was the appropriate amount of attention paid to each character and her storyline. There was a common story throughout and each character had a chapter to be included and read her point of view. Sometimes it's easy to get lost in this format, but I think the author did a nice job of moving the story along.
Also, this book is a little smutty. No real sex scenes...but there were some steamy romance-y moments. LOVE.
The end of the book is when everything really starts to get juicy and supernatural. There were times that I had to re-read a couple of paragraphs to map out what was going on (which kinda stinks), but ultimately the conclusion of the book was pretty good. It will definitely be interesting to see where we land with book 2.
Overall, I really liked it. I read it via Kindle, but I bet I'll end up buying a paperback version for my shelf because I see myself re-reading this sometime in the future.

TIDBIT: You know what this book reminded me of? The Nora Roberts Three Sisters Island trilogy...I think that may have been the first witch trilogy I read way back when. It's essentially the story of 3 witches (sisters) who have to right the wrongs of their ancestors in order to save the land they live on. Rank: A
