20 Times a Lady by Karyn Bosnak
This was the perfect book to read on the beach with nothing better to do. I wouldn't say that this is a book that you must run out and read right now, but for what it was...it was a fun read.
Summary: Delilah Darling is a woman on the cusp of 30 who loses her job and sleeps with her heinous former boss in an entanglement that's the 20th notch on her headboard. It's a painful realization, as she'd just read in the New York Post, that the average person has 10.5 partners in their lifetime. Fearing she has more than reached her quota, Delilah takes off on a cross-country trip, determined to find "the one" among the 20 of her former lovers. But she soon discovers that the men of her romantic past "an inmate, a rehab patient, a dog-obsessed Amway salesman and a Muppeteer among them" aren't exactly life-partner material.
This book was 100% predictable. Anyone who read the back cover could tell you what the outcome of this book would be...but that doesn't mean it wasn't entertaining. There were some humorous bits throughout that made me smile. And the book had a nice message of not dwelling on your past mistakes, but instead be happy and know that those mistakes shape who you are today.
One thing that I did not care for was the format of the book. Luckily I read this in paperback, because I don't think this book would translate well via Kindle. There were graphical treatments meant to indicate voicemails left on a phone...and there were footnotes. Footnotes must be a new trend for authors. I'm not a fan. I think it takes away from the flow of the story. Sometimes it helps enhance the humor in a situation. But most of the time it feels like a cop-out and the author could have found a better way to include that comment into the story itself.
They're making this book into a movie and I think the movie will be pretty cute. Honestly, I could see the movie and be fine not reading the book. But as I mentioned earlier, the purpose of the book was to entertain me while I lounged in the sun. It was a nice, light read that didn't challenge me mentally.
